This section contains the institutional and organisational information of IRBLleida, with the aim of providing information on its legal nature, objectives, governance structure, advisory bodies, management team, internal organisation and main institutional documents.

IRBLleida is a private foundation in the public sector, not-for-profit, with its own legal personality and full capacity to act, attached to the public sector of the Generalitat of Catalonia. The Institute's purpose is to promote, develop, transfer, manage and disseminate excellent biomedical research, as well as innovation, teaching and training in the field of life and health sciences.

IRBLleida carries out its activities in accordance with the principles of transparency, integrity, good governance, efficiency, accountability and regulatory compliance, in line with its mission, vision, institutional values and commitments to quality and compliance.

Ombudsperson
  • The IRBLleida has an ombudsperson whose mission is to ensure scientific integrity at the Institute. The ombudsperson at IRBLleida is Dr. Enric Herrero. The Ombudsperson has the mission of contributing to prevent ethical irregularities and provide young researchers with a framework of confidence in compliance with the code of conduct. Cases may be referred to the Ombudsperson regarding disagreements between researchers, conflicts and integrity issues, scientific malpractice or non-compliance with the IRBLleida or CERCA Code of Conduct: ombudsperson@irblleida.cat.
  • In addition, according to the CERCA Code of Conduct CERCA centers will inform the CERCA Institution of the existence of a conflict of scientific integrity that is of sufficient relevance and, in parallel, raise it to the CERCA Ombudsperson, under parameters of strict confidentiality and respect for the people allegedly involved. Relevant cases may be related with the revision or retraction of articles and that may result in disciplinary measures or that involve the direction or management of the center (ombudsperson@cerca.cat).
Use of animals in research

The Lleida Biomedical Research Institute's Dr. Pifarré Foundation (IRBLleida) has joined the Agreement on Openness on Animal Research, promoted by the Federation of Scientific Societies in Spain (COSCE) with the collaboration of the European Association of Research Animals (EARA), and launched on November 26th, 2016.

Scientists at the IRBLleida study fundamental biological processes in our genes, cells, tissues and organs. The use of animal models in our research is essential to advance the knowledge about mechanisms of health and disease. This knowledge will lead to treatments and cures otherwise not possible.

IRBLleida scientists study complex and highly prevalent diseases such as cancer, neurological and neuromuscular disorders, respiratory and renal diseases among many others. They only use animals when necessary for developing their research projects, and always consider alternatives to animal research, such as cell culture, simple organisms, computer modelling or human samples.

The highest standards in animal welfare are of paramount relevance for the IRBLleida scientists since it is necessary for research excellence, as is the compliance and respect to the legislation on the protection of animals. All experimental protocols have to be approved by the Ethics Committee on Animal Experimentation of University of Lleida (UdL) and the Applied and Experimental Biomedical Research Center (CREBA).

The IRBLleida also ensures that researchers have the highest level of education, training and professional skills for animal research, and the personnel directly involved in animal care guarantees the best facilities, husbandry, wellbeing and veterinary care.

Stakeholders

Stakeholders are individuals or legal entities of a private nature that participate actively in public policies or in decision-making processes involving the Administration of the Generalitat of Catalonia and its public sector in order to influence in the orientation of these policies in defense of self-interest or of third parties, or of a general interest. The Register gives stakeholders a number of advantages when it comes to interacting with the Administration and the public sector and accessing information about their activities and initiatives.
